The Path to Eternal Life

What Defiles Us

Have you ever wondered what truly separates us from God? In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus boldly confronts the traditions of His day and challenges the very foundation of how people viewed righteousness and judgment. Before Christ, religious leaders established countless rules—telling people what to eat, how to eat, and using these laws to draw lines that pushed people further from God. But Jesus broke through these traditions, declaring all foods clean and powerfully teaching that what defiles a person isn’t what enters the stomach, but what comes out of the heart. Imagine the shock in the crowd as Jesus exposed the emptiness of religious hypocrisy and called everyone to a deeper, more authentic relationship with Him. The heart—not the stomach or tradition—is what truly defines us. And when you surrender to Christ, He fills you with the Holy Spirit, reshaping your life through His love, not through the self-serving rules of mankind.
Mark 7:14-23
After He called the crowd to Him again, He began saying to them, “Listen to Me, all of you, and understand: 15 there is nothing outside the man which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man. 16 [ [f ] If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”]

Picture the scene: Jesus’ disciples, confused and eager to understand, ask Him for clarity. Patiently, Jesus explains that nothing from outside, nothing we eat or drink, can corrupt our souls—because those things never reach our heart. Instead, it’s the unspoken thoughts, the hidden motives, and the evil that can arise from deep within us that truly pollute our lives. He lists the realities—evil thoughts, envy, pride, and more—that each of us must face and fight. Jesus isn’t giving a set of rules; He’s offering a new way of living, a freedom that’s found in Him alone. This message is as radical today as it was then: real change starts inside, in the heart transformed by Christ’s love and grace.

17 When he had left the crowd and entered the house, His disciples questioned Him about the parable. 18 And He *said to them, “Are you so lacking in understanding also? Do you not understand that whatever goes into the man from outside cannot defile him, 19 because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and [g ] is eliminated?” ( Thus, He declared all foods clean.) 20 And He was saying, “That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, [h ] fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, 22 deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, [i ] envy, slander, [j ] pride and foolishness. 23 All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man.” (NAS)

So, are you willing to let Jesus transform your heart? The path the world offers is wide and easy, but it leads to destruction. Jesus calls you to something greater—a life led by His Spirit, marked by true freedom and lasting change. Turn away from empty traditions and the shallow judgments of men; instead, let His love renew you from the inside out.
